Our Camino – Day 3, Roncesvalles to Zubiri – 21.9 Kms

Day 3 of Our Camino

Day 528 – August 11th, 2015.

Even though I was woken up at 2 in the morning from what I can only think was cleaners flushing toilets and banging doors, I managed to get a couple of hours of needed sleep after walking from Orisson to Roncesvalles yesterday.

The majority of pilgrims had already left by the time we were ready to go for breakfast over at the restaurant Sabina, and there was a que waiting to be served. This breakfast cost 3.50 Euro and even though the coffee was not bad. I’m not sure that we would pay and que up like that again considering that just outside of Roncesvalles on the Camino way are a couple of villages where you could find a cafe.

I posed at the 790 Km to Santiago de Compostela sign before continuing our Camino walk from Roncesvalles to Zubiri. Burguete was the first village.

The walk to Zubiri goes up and down nearly the entire way, between 900 & 500m.

We were joined by Wolfgang and Sandro for some of the walk, whom we had met in Orisson. Great company along the walk and we stopped for a snack near the river Erro.

The guys continued on while we stopped for a beer and sandwich at this small bar near Viskarret.

The next village we passed through was Lintzoain.

By the time we reached the peak of Alto Erro we were both absolutely drained, we needed a sugar fix, a can of coke helped out before making our way down to Zubiri. Here at the top, just before making our way, we were approached by a young man who was sat on a chair handing out flyers to the Auberge where he worked.

We decided to reserve our beds with him as we knew it would be late when we get to Zubiri and lots of pilgrims would be needing a place to sleep.

The way down was steep in places and once again we both felt the pain in our legs.

At last we could see a glimpse of the town Zubiri and soon enough we were walking towards our accommodation, which happened to be a bit further away from the centre than most other Auberge. By the way, most of these were full, and by the time we had checked in a couple came looking and our place was full and they were struggling to find a bed.

Arriving in Zubiri at 4pm was a huge relief. That was an 8 hour day, even though we did have a few breaks, all up we walked for 6 and a half hours in very hot conditions, crazy really.

Our digs was very new and the walk to here drained our last energy. Thankfully Alexy the young man from the top of the peak Erro was here to welcome us and instantly handed us a beer each.

Note; This walk from Roncesvalles to Zubiri was the toughest day yet, going up and down for nearly 22 Kms was maybe too much and we’d more than likely do this in two stages another time.

Our feet and legs were tired and aching lots, my calves were very painful and Moni had very sore feet. I guess that is the Camino for you.

It is not an ‘easy walk in the park’ and we passed a marker today on the way of a Japanese man who had died while on the Camino walk, a timely reminder to take it easy.

We enjoyed dinner in the Auberge thanks to Alexi who cooked and served us a huge bowl of spaghetti bolognaise (6 Euro) with a bottle of red wine which we shared with a french couple from our dorm.

Camino costs

  • Beers & sandwich 7.00
  • Soft drink 1.50
  • Water 1.00
  • Dinner 12.00
  • Accommodation in Zubiri 30.00 in a huge dorm

Total for today is 51.50 Euro. 25.75 each for day 3 of our Camino.
