Gorgeous Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

I wish I’d planned and booked for a longer stay here in Las Palmas. Yes, this place ticks lots of boxes.

Moni & I have been here for just over three weeks so far and already know that we want to stay longer. This place is wonderful and yet we’ve only seen a little.

Las Palmas is a cosmopolitan city from the Canary islands of which there are 7 in total. Four of them are well known, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura & Gran Canaria. They are each very popular with tourists all year round due to their location being near to the Tropic of Cancer and blessed with average winter temperatures of 17 and 25 in summer.

Gran Canaria is easy to get to via plane with Madrid being only 2 and a half hours away and other major European cities around 4 hours flying time and just over 6 hours to the USA.

There are plenty of places to stay, be it hotels, apartments, co-sharing spaces etc.

Our apartment in Las Palmas is very central which is perfect for us. To the left is the fabulous Playa de Las Canteras (beach) to the right the Puerto de La Luz (port).

The port has around 800,000 visitors a year (tourism stats) from the ships that connect the islands as well as the huge cruise ships that visit more & more often.

I expect this port to become even more popular as word gets out about how wonderful this place is to visit. Especially by ship with the port La Luz being so close to the heart of the city Las Palmas, making it a perfect cruise destination. You can literally walk off the ship and within ten minutes be at the Las Canteras beach or in town where you can enjoy a coffee and a bocadillo (sandwich) from one of the many cafes or even a caña (small beer) or even a menu de dia (daily menu) all at very reasonable prices.

All around are cafes, bars, restaurants, shops etc. everything is within walking distance and even the bigger brand name shops along the Av José Mesa y López street is not far at either side of the Plaza de España.

Moni was fortunate to take a trip to the centre of the island and up to the Roque Nublo as part of the Digital Nomad Girls retreat at the beginning of the month. It is one of the highest points of the island in Tejeda.

We plan on hiring a car for a couple of days and scooting around to see more.

This is only a short post to wet your appetite for a visit to Las Palmas or maybe even one of the other Canary islands.
